These photographs were inspired by the Pink Floyd song Jugband Blues, written by Syd Barrett, and especially by the lines:
"It's awfully considerate of you to think of me here
And I'm most obliged to you for making it clear
That I'm not here."
And I'm most obliged to you for making it clear
That I'm not here."
Later, I came to understand that Wish You Were Here was, in a way, connected to Jugband Blues.
I used to play and sing Jugband Blues on guitar, and one day, while walking with my camera, I experimented with long exposures for the first time. As the images emerged, I felt that they captured something of the song's atmosphere—a sense of presence and absence, of being there and not there at the same time.
Through these photographs, I found a visual way to express what Jugband Blues had made me feel for years.
